Kokkinos Pirgos is located 67 km southwest of Heraklion, near Timpaki and serves the largest port of the Messara plain while the beautiful sandy beach has contributed to its tourism development. In Kokkinos Pirgos there are several small hotels and rooms for rent, taverns and cafes. The climate in the area is very warm, a fact that can be seen from the many greenhouse crops, mainly with fresh vegetables. In front of the settlement there is a very long sandy beach, which starts west of the settlement and extends for many kilometers to the east, to Komos. Caretta caretta sea turtles lay their eggs in this huge sandy beach during the summer months, hence the activity of ecological organizations. The beach of Kokkinos Pirgos starts to the west from the wires of the military airport of Timpaki and continues to the east to Agia Galini. The eastern part, from the port of Kokkinos Pirgos to the airport, is a great wetland with brackish water called Kataliki.
