A new road to Messara
Recently, several important road projects have been completed in Crete. Today, however, we would like to write to you about a completely different new road located in the Messara area. This long-awaited investment is part of one of the most important roads constituting a vertical communication artery on the route between Heraklion and the Messara area. It is a very busy route that thousands of cars pass every day. Many of them are large goods vehicles that transport, inter alia, agricultural produce produced by farmers gathered around the extremely fertile lands located in Messara.
The new route allows you to save 15 minutes of time in relation to the old route which went through two large villages with heavy traffic. Three modern tunnels with a total length of about 1.6 km, as well as 5 bridges with a total length of 928 m allowed to reduce the distance between Agia Varvara and Moires. Drivers overcoming the new road will go about 5 kilometers less compared to the old road. The Ministry also emphasizes that investment in a measurable way should also increase safety.
Modern infrastructure, greater transparency of signage and better-equipped communication nodes should reduce the number of accidents. Of course, this aspect will also largely depend on the behavior and compliance of drivers who follow this path. In total, the completion time of all sections and engineering structures lasted for over 13 years and was marked by a number of long-term delays. Only the last 3 years of intensive work have allowed the completion of this project and putting it at the drivers' disposal.
