LOCATION
Matala
Matala is located around 75 km southwest of Heraklion, on the southern coast of Crete. The village is set in a dramatic natural bay framed by sandstone cliffs, famous for their artificial caves carved into the rock. These caves date back to the Neolithic period and were later used during the Minoan era, when Matala served as the port of ancient Phaistos. Originally a quiet fishing village, Matala became internationally known in the 1960s when its caves were occupied by the hippie community, a period that still defines much of its identity today. This unique history is celebrated every year during the Matala Beach Festival, a three-day event that revives the village’s bohemian spirit. Today, Matala is a small coastal village that relies mainly on tourism, combining its archaeological heritage, iconic landscape, and countercultural legacy into one of southern Crete’s most recognisable destinations.
