Plaka is one of the most traditional villages of Crete. It belongs to the prefecture of Chania and is 23 kilometers from Chania. It is built at an altitude of about 70 meters above the coastal Almirida and has a very healthy climate. Its permanent residents do not exceed 300 but in the summer, they become much more. They mainly deal with their farms (olives, vineyards, gardens) and produce very good oil, wine and traditional Cretan drink, tsikoudia. A large number of residents are engaged in tourism, as the area has in recent years been a mild-mannered tourist resort and some others fish or graze their sheep and goats.
